Michael Penix Jr. threw three touchdown passes, and Atlanta forced four turnovers to end San Francisco’s 6–0 start.

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons turned four takeaways into a statement win Sunday, beating the previously unbeaten San Francisco 49ers 29–20 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Michael Penix Jr. threw three touchdown passes, and Atlanta scored 13 points off San Francisco’s four turnovers. The 49ers fell to 6–1; the Falcons improved to 3–4 and snapped a two-game losing streak. Associated Press recap

San Francisco struck first and built a 14–3 lead early in the second quarter. Atlanta stayed in reach as Penix found tight end Nick Muse for a touchdown, and Nick Folk’s 33-yard field goal trimmed the deficit. A fumble by 49ers running back Kaelon Black, forced by Maason Smith and recovered by Gervon Dexter Sr., helped the Falcons close the half trailing 14–12.

Atlanta took control after the break. Khalil Herbert’s 38-yard kickoff return gave the Falcons favorable field position, and Penix finished the opening second-half drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Pitts. Jessie Bates III intercepted Brock Purdy near the Atlanta goal line later in the third quarter, setting up another scoring drive. Penix capped it with a 21-yard touchdown throw to Drake London, extending the Falcons’ lead to 26–14. Falcons game breakdown

The 49ers made the finish tense. Officials overturned Purdy’s apparent touchdown pass to Jordan Watkins after a review, and Za’Darius Smith sacked Purdy on fourth down. San Francisco got another chance and cut the margin to six on Purdy’s 1-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Juszczyk, but Eddy Piñeiro missed the extra point.

A poor Atlanta punt gave the 49ers the ball near midfield with about four minutes left. Purdy’s second interception, picked off by rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels with 2:34 to play, ended the comeback threat. Folk added a 31-yard field goal, and Daniels recovered a late George Kittle fumble to secure the win. Associated Press recap

Penix finished 25 of 34 for 213 yards without an interception. Purdy threw for 288 yards and a touchdown, but Atlanta’s defense turned his two interceptions—and the two lost fumbles—into the game’s defining difference. “Too sloppy to win,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said afterward. The Falcons entered Sunday looking to halt a skid and earn their first home win of the season. They did it by matching San Francisco’s early punch, protecting a second-half lead and making the decisive plays when the 49ers had the ball. The 49ers’ perfect start is over; Atlanta leaves with a win that could give its season new direction.
